What is Oceans Declare, anyway?

During my years as a pastor, I always felt that God had written a rather unique story in my life.  As I have studied life in the oceans deeply as a scientist and researcher, and as I have studied the Bible deeply as a pastor and disciple-maker, God has continually revealed Himself to me through the oceans.  Until now, I was content to keep this story between Him and I.

I have started this blog and platform as an outlet for my own heart and mind, in hopes that my writing and the pictures somehow inspire and encourage others.  I write with a diverse audience in mind.  I write for the Christ-lover who is also an ocean-lover, encountering God among the waves and the reefs.  I write for the Christian struggling in their faith because of a scientific mind, hoping that we will navigate tough questions and consider the unfathomable nature of God while we explore the fathoms of the sea.  I write for the scientist wondering if there is something more that cannot be answered by the natural methods of the scientific method.

There is a well-know scripture in Psalm 8 that says, "the heavens declare the glory of God."  We certainly are in wonder as we look at the grandiose sky on a starlit night.  Nevertheless, the vast majority of us will never be able to touch the stars.  We can touch the oceans, and they even seem to beckon us to touch and explore.  I believe this is God calling us, and that His oceans declare His glory as much as the Heavens, just a bit closer and discoverable.  No scripture specifically says the oceans declare the glory of God, but they do say the following:

  • Psalm 148:7 - Praise the Lord from the earth, you great sea creatures and all deeps.

  • Psalm 98:4-7 - Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth; break forth in joyous song and sing praises!... Let the sea roar, and all that fills it; the world and those who dwell in it.

  • Psalm 111:2 - Great are the works of the Lord, studied by all who delight in them.  Full of splendor and majesty is his work.

  • Psalm 8:9 - O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in ALL the earth!

  • Psalm 96:11-12 - Let the sea resound, and all that is in it.

My hope is that this blog will lead us to deeper wonder at the one who holds the oceans in His hands.  My prayer is that my teachings will lead us to greater witness in line with the Christ we follow.  And ultimately, my desire is that we will be led to join the oceans in worship - in declaring the glory of God.
