This Anchor Holds

I remember the first time my anchor slipped. I was sailing around the Caribbean in college on a semester at sea. This was not one of those luxury cruise college experiences. We were twenty students aboard a 131' schooner, being taught to sail and navigate by eight crew members. On our first midnight watch, the first mate was teaching our small group about the importance of checking the anchor. She put her hand on the large anchor chain, to show us what to do and tell us what to feel for, but to her shock she felt it right then. Our anchor was slipping! It had grabbed onto some loose sand rather than the rock, and the waves were slowly but surely pushing our vessel towards the reef.

Sailors, boaters and divers know the importance of dropping anchor. In the midst of an ocean full of waves your boat is fully vulnerable to the drift of the sea, and the anchor provides the only security. But your anchor is only as good as what it is holding onto. It is no wonder that the author of Hebrews compares the hope we have in Christ to an anchor for the soul. Hebrews 6:18-19 says

Therefore, we who have fled to him [meaning Christ] for refuge can have great confidence as we hold to the hope that lies before us. This hope is a strong and trustworthy anchor for our souls.

Dive Deeper:

  1. What "waves" or "currents" in our world or your life are causing you anxiety and worry? What difference would a steady anchor make in your day?

  2. What is the hope we have in Christ? Would you compare this hope to a "strong and trustworthy anchor"? Why or why not?

  3. Consider the news you watch on TV or read on the internet today. Or think about the worries and concerns facing you today. How are these realities, stories and circumstances impacting your throughout the day? How does the imagery of an anchor holding steady in a storm help you face today?

Next time you are dropping an anchor, give thanks for the strong and trustworthy anchor that is available to us all in Christ.
